Lughnasadh is one of the four fire festivals celebrated throughout the year (along with Imbolc, Beltane, & Samhain). It is largely associated with Lammas, a European harvest festival & Christian tradition also known as Loaf Mass Day, corresponding to the beginning of harvest season for most European countries. Lughnasadh is named after Lugh, the Sun God & son of Tailtiu & is said to have started by Lugh himself as a funeral feast & game in honor of his Mother. Traditionally, Lughnasadh festivals included activities like baking breads, sharing in feasts, participating in ritual athletic competitions (known as the Tailteann Games), matchmaking, & trading. For Neo-Pagans, Lughnasadh is the halfway point between the Summer Solstice & the Autumn Equinox, serving as a hinge between seasons, full of change & preparation for the dark seasons to come. In conjunction with the nature of Lughnasadh, we can also reflect inwards at our own accomplishments & reap the rewards of those seeds that were planted during Imbolc & nurtured by us throughout the year. It is a time to prepare for the cold, dark seasons ahead with the first harvest, while also instilling courage, confidence, & strength within us to survive the harsh side of the wheel. It is also a time to act upon anything that we haven’t been able to muster throughout the year, that which was not planted during Imbolc, but has revealed itself throughout the year as something to be worked upon. Lughnasadh is also a good opportunity to harness what of the sun we have left available before it wanes into darkness, & to celebrate the sun for charging the Earth & allowing growth & harvest in our lives to occur.
