SAMHAIN (OCTOBER 31ST)
The time of Fall is here, the dark curtain of night descends & the veil between worlds begins to lift. The physical world decomposes before us; the crunch of leaves as they fall to our feet, pumpkin & spices overcoming the scent of decay, permeates our noses & warms our bellies, that first winter chill sharpening its blade along our cheeks. The Ancient Celtics believed that life begins out of darkness, just as our fetuses take form in the darkness of our mother’s womb, just as the root sprouts from the darkness of Yule to the surface of Imbolc. Samhain marks the end of the harvests with the last harvest of livestock. After butchering all of their livestock for the winter months ahead, they would take their remaining livestock & offer it up to the gods in a Samhain fire. The Celtics would light a torch from the bonfire & place it outside their home for the blessings of the gods. Because of this, Ancient Celtics also believed that Samhain marks the end of the Wheel. The harvests are over & the land begins to die, so that it may be re-born, fulfilling the natural cycle of the Earth. Samhain was revered with both fear & honor, death & then, life. As the veil begins to lift during this time, the Celtics would build altars with offerings to the faeries & spirits out of respect & with hopes they would be blessed by these ethereal beings. They believed this was the time in which their faeries, spirits, & other ethereal beings would reach through the veil to offer knowledge from the spirit realm, while gaining knowledge from the physical realm to bring back. There is a lot of folklore centered around Samhain & its contemporary version Halloween, but Samhain was known to be first celebrated by the Ancient Celtics in Scotland & Ireland. As the Church began whitewashing all of the beliefs, Samhain slowly turned into All Hallow’s Eve, the night before Halloween, when demons & ghosts would walk among the living, creating havoc & ill luck. After Halloween, All Saint’s Day took the heroic arm as the day the Saints would reach through the veil between worlds & pull the demons from the physical realm, sending them all back to Hell. Over time, the traditions evolved. In Scotland, people often dressed up & wore masks, so that the spirits could not tell them apart. In Ireland, they would dress up & go door to door to receive offerings of sweets. October 31st also marks Dia De Los Muertos (Day Of The Dead), which also ends on All Saint’s Day. During Dia De Los Muertos, Mexicans set altars up with offerings to their deceased. It is a time when they are remembered & honored by the living, when they can roam the physical realm. The Mexicans also believed that in wearing masks & costumes, the dead could blend with the living for being ushered back to the spirit realm on All Saint’s Day.
